Adaptive Controllers Produce the Correct DLI for Optimal Plant Health

Grow-Ray adaptive controller / sensors optimize lighting throughout a greenhouse. Each luminaire has its own sensor, effectively providing plants with their own “light meter."  If a particular section of a greenhouse is shaded from the early morning sun, Grow-Ray lights adjust to provide the plants with ideal level of light. At the same time ​lights on the eastern side of a greenhouse would be dimmed or off. This reduces energy consumption significantly and provides plants with the correct DLI (Daylight Integral) at all times.

Grow-Ray's adaptive controllers / sensors adjust light intensity in real time, based on available sunlight. If full sunlight is is available, Grow-Ray LED fixtures are automatically turned off. If the sun is dimmed, lights are turned on in a linear fashion, with just a little for a passing cloud, to full on for a rainy day, or short winter days. Adaptive dimming thresholds are factory set for 200 to 600 PAR as standard.  Maximum is 1000 PAR , or may be user modified within this range.  Grow-Ray adaptive sensors provide plants with the correct DLI for optimal growing results.

Grow-Ray adaptive controllers ensure optimum light levels throughout the entire crop cycle while minimizing the amount of energy expended.  This is how:

  1. ​Grower uses personally obtained or published lighting profiles for individual crops. 
  2. Purchases pre-set adaptive controllers for recommended light levels (PPFD levels of 200 to 1000), or sets ​(if necessary) the ones he already owns.
  3. Then:  The adaptive controllers measure the sunlight level, real-time and adjust the amount of light produced to achieve the optimal light intensity at all times (see chart​ to right).

Adaptive Controller /  Sensor for Greenhouse Lighting

Grow-Ray's self-contained, Adaptive  Controller / Light Sensor (patent pending) optimizes light levels in greenhouses to provide the perfect supplemental lighting.  In one field test Grow-Ray fixtures with adaptive sensors reduced electricity consumption 80% while producing an 18 % higher cannabis yield compared to HPS results.

How Grow-Ray's Adaptive Controller Works 

             Reduced shading To maximize ​Available sunlight

Many greenhouse growers refuse to use supplemental lighting even though they know it can extend the growing season and even provide additional ones.  Why? In greenhouse environments supplemental lights will block a significant percentage of sunlight.  This means that the supplemental lights have to be turned on more frequently to offset the shadows they create, causing a big bump in their electric bills and more labor tracking when the lights should be on, or poor plant growth if forgotten. 

Grow-Ray's patent pending luminaires minimize the loss of available sunlight.  At only 8% shading, Grow-Ray offers the smallest shadow of any light on the market.  One look at the non-streamlined shape of competing lights tells the story--large shadows covering valuable plant canopy. Other brands hide their true shading numbers by claiming that their lights can be placed under existing struts or beams. This is an impractical and unrealistic solution in most greenhouses. Grow-Ray's unique shape passively reflects sunlight to the canopy below. This allows plants to receive the maximum available daylight in almost every greenhouse environment. 

​             Single Bar Lighting Increases Yield 10% to 30%

Single bar lighting augments sunlight and multi-bar lighting to ensure even PAR throughout plant canopy. Single bar lighting can provide additional light to increase plant growth in rooms where multi-bar systems are mounted high above the canopy. Single bar systems can also be used to brighten up dark corners, behind weight bearing pillars, and wherever structural  barriers block the sun. Tight growing spaces can also block overhead lights or sunlight from penetrating as deeply into the canopy.  In any situation where a portion of a tray is under lit, single bar lighting is an excellent solution. 

Grow-Ray single bar lights can be hung or be held by a heavy duty gooseneck clamp (available from Grow-Ray), on a bendable extension to ensure ideal placement.  With effective placement, single bar lighting can expand crop yield from 10%-30%:

  • ​Horizontally, adjacent to the canopy on the edges or in the center of the room
  • ​Vertically, adjacent to the canopy in corners, behind structural sunlight barriers, or inside the canopy itself
  • ​Back to back side-lights, side lighting trays on both sides of an aisle
